AT Kabul: The World Food Programme (WFP) has reported that approximately 9.5 million people in Afghanistan will face severe food insecurity and require urgent food assistance between May and October 2025.
According to the latest figures released by WFP, 1.6 million people are experiencing “emergency” levels of food insecurity, while 7.93 million are classified under the “crisis” category. Despite a slight improvement from the March–April period—when 12.6 million Afghans were food insecure—the situation remains dire.
The WFP expressed deep concern over the increasing dependency of Afghans on humanitarian aid and identified Afghanistan as one of the world’s hunger hotspots.
Ongoing challenges such as climate change, economic instability, and a 40% reduction in humanitarian funding pose serious risks to vulnerable families across the country.
The organization warned that without sustained international support, Afghanistan’s fragile food security situation could deteriorate further in the coming months.
