KABUL – Afghans staged widespread protests across the country Friday to denounce Israeli strikes on Gaza, answering a call by the Taliban authorities for mass mobilization.
Large crowds gathered in Kabul and other cities after Friday prayers, waving Palestinian and Taliban flags, chanting anti-Israel slogans, and burning images of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
“We are here to support Gaza and stand against oppression,” said Jannat, a 28-year-old protester in Kabul.
The demonstrations come amid mounting global concern over the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, where Israel’s military campaign has resumed following the collapse of a brief truce in March. A partial easing of Israel’s aid blockade has done little to stem severe shortages, with the UN warning that all Gazans are at risk of famine.
Taliban Prime Minister Hassan Akhund condemned Israel’s actions as “genocide,” accusing it of flouting international humanitarian norms and escalating violence against civilians.
The Taliban, which governs Afghanistan but remains unrecognised internationally, has consistently voiced strong support for Palestinians and opposition to Israeli policies in the occupied territories.
