KABUL – In a powerful statement to Russian media, former Afghan President Hamid Karzai has publicly blamed the Taliban’s ban on girls’ education as the central reason why the international community refuses to recognize Afghanistan’s interim government.
“Afghanistan’s development and the end to mass migration depend on educating our girls,” Karzai said. “Without it, we have no hope, no future, and no place in the global community.”
Karzai stressed that despite many Taliban officials privately supporting girls’ education, the official policy remains a major obstacle to both national progress and international legitimacy. He said restoring access to schools and universities for girls is the only path to a stable and connected Afghanistan.
“We want our girls in classrooms. We want universities open. The world will not accept a country that shuts its daughters out of the future,” he warned.
The former president also shared a personal plea: his daughter, having completed primary school, now faces an uncertain future — while his son just graduated high school in Kabul.
Karzai’s remarks mark one of the strongest internal calls yet for the Taliban to reverse its ban, echoing global demands for immediate change.
