Iran Orders Millions of Afghans to Leave or Face Arrest as Deportation Deadline Expires

KABUL — Iran has enforced a sweeping deportation deadline, warning millions of Afghan migrants and refugees to leave the country by Sunday or face arrest. The ultimatum, which follows heightened security concerns after Iran’s recent conflict with Israel, threatens to displace hundreds of thousands and adds new pressure to an already fragile Afghanistan.

Iran hosts an estimated 4 million Afghans, many of whom have lived there for decades. In March, the Iranian government gave undocumented Afghans until July 6 to leave voluntarily or be forcibly removed. Since then, over 700,000 Afghans have returned, with more than 230,000 departing in June alone, according to the International Organization for Migration (IOM). The UN refugee agency (UNHCR) estimates that during the height of the Iran-Israel conflict, deportations surged to over 30,000 people a day.

While Tehran insists the campaign targets only undocumented residents, aid groups warn that the mass expulsions could further destabilize Afghanistan, which is already grappling with poverty, drought, and the effects of prolonged conflict. The UNHCR describes returning Afghans as exhausted and disoriented upon arrival, with many facing dire humanitarian conditions.

Tensions over Afghan migrants have been exacerbated in Iran by economic hardship, political rhetoric, and claims—amplified by social media—that Afghans were involved in espionage during the war. Iranian officials argue that while they have historically hosted millions of Afghans, national security now takes precedence.

Humanitarian agencies have urged Iran to ensure safe, dignified, and voluntary returns, warning that the forced expulsions could fuel a new crisis in the region.
