Qatar Reaffirms Commitment to Empower Afghan People and Build Peaceful State

KABUL — The State of Qatar has reiterated its strong commitment to supporting concerted international efforts aimed at empowering the Afghan people to build a peaceful, stable, and developing Afghanistan. This declaration was made during the United Nations General Assembly’s plenary meeting on “The Situation in Afghanistan,” where Her Excellency Sheikha Alya Ahmed bin Saif Al-Thani, Qatar’s Permanent Representative to the UN, delivered the country’s statement.

Sheikha Alya highlighted Qatar’s longstanding role in facilitating peace in Afghanistan, beginning with the Doha peace process and the landmark 2020 peace agreement between the United States and the Taliban. Qatar has continued to foster inclusive political dialogue by hosting various rounds of talks involving all segments of Afghan society, including the UN-led Doha Process, which aims to coordinate international engagement and create conditions conducive to internal peace and regional cooperation.

The statement also spotlighted Qatar’s facilitation of specialized working groups that address Afghanistan’s priority challenges. Recent meetings included the third counter-narcotics working group focused on enhancing cooperation to combat drug trafficking and its regional and global effects, and the second private sector working group aiming to support economic engagement and recovery.

Her Excellency underscored the multifaceted challenges Afghanistan faces, such as humanitarian crises, natural disasters including droughts and floods, and the critical need for education access. Qatar’s efforts extend beyond diplomacy, providing humanitarian aid in cooperation with UN agencies—such as food assistance, healthcare support, scholarships, and programs designed to empower Afghan women and youth economically and socially, fostering resilience amid ongoing crises.

Qatar’s renewed commitment signals a call for integrated international support involving political, humanitarian, and development actors to ensure Afghanistan’s peaceful reintegration into the global community and sustainable development.
