KABUL — Afghanistan’s Meteorological Authority has installed and activated three automated weather forecasting stations in strategic locations across the country, a move aimed at strengthening early warning systems and improving weather accuracy in high-risk areas. According to TOLOnews, the new stations have been placed in Jabal Seraj district of Parwan province and the Southern and Northern Salang Passes—vital transport corridors that connect the capital, Kabul, to northern Afghanistan and are frequently affected by snow and harsh weather conditions.
The automated stations are designed to provide real-time monitoring of critical meteorological data, including temperature, humidity, rainfall, snowfall, wind speed and direction, and atmospheric pressure. These indicators will help authorities issue timely weather alerts, support aviation and road safety, and enhance disaster response mechanisms in remote and mountainous regions.
The Salang Pass, in particular, is known for being a treacherous stretch during winter months, with frequent snowstorms and avalanches often cutting off access between Kabul and the northern provinces. By placing automated systems in this area, Afghan officials hope to mitigate the impact of extreme weather events on travel and trade, and reduce the number of fatalities caused by unpredictable storms.
The Meteorological Authority says the initiative is part of a broader effort to modernize Afghanistan’s weather infrastructure after decades of underinvestment and conflict-related damage.
