KABUL – In the wake of India’s recent air and missile strikes on Pakistan, dubbed “Operation Sindoor,” Afghanistan finds itself on high alert, concerned about the potential repercussions of the escalating conflict between its two neighboring countries. The strikes, which targeted alleged terrorist infrastructures in Pakistan and Pakistan-administered Kashmir, were in retaliation for the April 22 Pahalgam attack that killed 26 Hindu tourists.
The closure of the Attari-Wagah border has already disrupted trade routes, leaving Afghan traders stranded with goods unable to cross into India. Approximately 2,000 containers carrying goods from India are reportedly stuck at Pakistani ports, exacerbating Afghanistan’s economic challenges.
Afghan officials have expressed deep concern over the escalating conflict. Hekmatullah Zaland, Deputy Director of Afghanistan’s Centre for Strategic Studies, stated that the spread of this tension could have a “direct negative impact” on Afghanistan and the broader region.
The international community, including the United Nations, the United States, and China, has urged both India and Pakistan to exercise restraint and engage in diplomatic dialogue to prevent further escalation. With both nations being nuclear-armed, the potential for a broader conflict poses a significant threat to regional and global stability.
