Afghanistan Eyes Expansion of Fresh Fruit Exports to New Regional Markets

AT Kabul:  The Ministry of Industry and Commerce announced plans to significantly expand Afghanistan’s fresh fruit exports this year by tapping into new regional markets, including Russia, Central Asia, and Gulf countries.

Speaking at a press conference in Kabul, Abdul Salam Jawad Akhundzada, spokesperson for the ministry, said Afghanistan is ready to boost agricultural exports and has set its sights on a range of new destinations. “We anticipate exporting our fresh fruits and agricultural products to Russia, Central Asian countries, Arab countries, as well as to India, Indonesia, Malaysia, and other nations. We are prepared for this,” Akhundzada said.

The ministry emphasized its commitment to increasing export volumes compared to the previous year, amid ongoing efforts to strengthen trade ties and overcome logistical barriers.

Meanwhile, members of Afghanistan’s private sector welcomed the announcement but underscored the importance of focusing on South Asian markets, which they believe hold the greatest potential for the country’s dried and fresh fruit exports.

“Good opportunities have been created through customs tariffs. For example, Uzbekistan has reduced customs duties on Afghan exports by 80 percent. Our traders can take advantage of this opportunity to establish a trade corridor between Kazakhstan and Russia,” said Mirwais Hajizada, deputy head of the Chamber of Agriculture and Livestock.

Despite these developments, Afghan farmers continue to face difficulties due to a lack of access to suitable foreign markets. Many are forced to sell perishable produce like melons, apples, apricots, grapes, and watermelons at extremely low prices in local markets.

Stakeholders are urging the government to take stronger measures to address export barriers and ensure long-term market access for agricultural goods. With renewed regional interest and favorable trade policies in some neighboring countries, officials remain hopeful about achieving significant growth in the sector this year.
