KABUL – At least 26 people were killed and 27 others injured early Wednesday when a passenger bus plunged down an embankment on the outskirts of Kabul, officials confirmed.
The deadly crash occurred around 3 a.m. in the Arghandi area as the bus, traveling from Kandahar and Helmand provinces, lost control and overturned. Interior Ministry spokesman Abdul Mateen Qani said reckless driving was the cause of the accident, adding that many of the injured remain in critical condition.
Rescue teams and local residents worked through the night to pull bodies from the wreckage and transport survivors to nearby hospitals. Distressing images from the scene show the bus mangled beyond recognition.
The tragedy comes less than a week after a devastating accident in Herat province that killed nearly 80 people, mostly Afghan migrants deported from Iran. Both incidents have been linked to speeding and poor road safety enforcement.
Traffic accidents are frequent across Afghanistan, where decades of conflict have left roads in disrepair and traffic regulations largely unenforced.
