Baku and Kabul Push for Stronger Economic Ties at 6th ECO Business Forum

KABUL — In a promising move to enhance regional economic integration, Azerbaijan and Afghanistan have launched talks aimed at expanding trade and investment cooperation. The discussions took place during the 6th Economic Cooperation Organization (ECO) Business Forum held in Shusha, Azerbaijan, a city celebrated for its rich cultural heritage and recent prominence as the OIC Youth Capital 2024.

Representing Azerbaijan, Yusif Abdullayev, Executive Director of the Azerbaijan Export and Investment Promotion Agency (AZPROMO), detailed the agency’s strategic priorities to attract foreign investment and foster cross-border collaboration. He emphasized sectors ripe for partnership including renewable energy, digital technologies, infrastructure development, and agribusiness—areas that align with global trends toward sustainability and innovation.

Tawakal Ahmadyar, Chairman of the Afghanistan Chamber of Commerce and Investment (ACCI), expressed Afghanistan’s keen interest in increasing investment flows into Azerbaijan, highlighting a shared vision to strengthen economic ties and promote stability through growth. The meeting underscored the importance of robust public-private dialogue to translate ambitions into concrete projects and partnerships.

This engagement signals a broader ambition by both countries to leverage their geographic and cultural connections to build resilient economic linkages in a region at the crossroads of Asia and Europe. As Afghanistan seeks new investment and Azerbaijan continues to position itself as a regional trade hub, these talks may unlock fresh opportunities for sustainable development, job creation, and enhanced regional connectivity.

Observers say the evolving partnership could be a key driver of economic transformation, offering Western investors an emerging corridor of growth in an often overlooked but strategically vital region.
