KABUL – China’s massive Mes Aynak copper mine project in Taliban-ruled Afghanistan highlights a complex gamble between economic hope and deep risks. While the mine promises to inject hundreds of millions of dollars into Afghanistan’s struggling economy and create thousands of jobs, serious concerns are mounting over the social, environmental, and cultural costs.
The project has already displaced hundreds of local families, many without clear compensation, raising urgent questions about their wellbeing amid increased health risks like malaria and waterborne diseases. Environmental experts warn that the mining process will produce massive waste that threatens to contaminate groundwater feeding millions, including Kabul’s population, putting water security in jeopardy.
Adding to the controversy, the mine sits atop one of Afghanistan’s richest archaeological sites—an ancient Buddhist city with artifacts up to 5,000 years old. Despite efforts to reduce damage by shifting to underground mining, much of this invaluable cultural heritage faces destruction, threatening to erase a key part of Afghanistan’s history.
China’s growing engagement through Mes Aynak is part of a wider strategy to secure copper for its clean energy industries and to expand its Belt and Road Initiative through the region. However, for Afghanistan, the gains may come with irreversible losses that could affect its environment, social fabric, and cultural legacy for generations.
