KABUL – India has announced its readiness to assist Afghanistan in developing sustainable water management systems and hydroelectric projects amid growing water scarcity challenges. Indian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal confirmed that New Delhi is willing to support Afghanistan in strengthening its water infrastructure, including dams and hydropower facilities, recalling the India–Afghanistan Friendship Dam in Herat as a successful model of bilateral cooperation.
The announcement comes as Afghanistan faces severe water stress due to prolonged droughts, outdated irrigation systems, and population growth, with tensions rising over shared rivers like the Helmand and Kunar. Afghan authorities recently revealed plans for a dam on the Kunar River to improve irrigation and electricity generation. Analysts note that India’s technical expertise could be vital in modernizing Afghanistan’s water management, provided regional cooperation frameworks are reinforced to prevent disputes.
