India has officially resumed visa services for Afghan nationals, nearly four years after suspending them following the Taliban’s takeover in August 2021.
Afghans can now apply online for visas under six categories: business, student, medical, medical attendant, entry, and UN diplomat, according to an official notice posted on India’s visa portal. Applicants must submit their Afghan National Identity Card (Tazkira) and ensure all supporting documents — such as invitation letters and business cards — are in English.
Biometric data will be collected upon arrival in India, and entry will be allowed only after an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) status is marked as “GRANTED” on the visa portal.
Medical visas will cover patients and their attendants, while entry visas extend to cultural visitors and minors accompanying parents or joining family in India. Afghan UN diplomats are also eligible under a separate category.
This move signals India’s gradual re-engagement with Afghanistan. Although New Delhi has not officially recognized the Taliban government, it reopened its embassy in Kabul in June 2022 with a technical team and has maintained high-level contacts, including a recent call between Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar and Amir Khan Muttaqi on May 15.
