KABUL — Iran and Afghanistan convened a joint technical meeting in Kabul on Thursday to accelerate the implementation of a comprehensive bilateral economic agreement aimed at strengthening trade and investment ties.
According to a statement from the Economic Affairs Office of the Taliban-led Afghan government, the session was held at the Marmarin Palace and brought together senior officials from both sides. The meeting reviewed progress on commitments made under the Tehran-Kabul economic pact and explored avenues to deepen cooperation.
Key discussions focused on resolving transit challenges, modernizing Afghanistan’s agriculture sector, encouraging investment in mining, and streamlining customs processes. The two sides also evaluated previous agreements in the transport sector.
Both governments emphasized the need for continued high-level engagement to ensure the full realization of the economic pact and to further cement regional economic integration.
Official data shows Iran-Afghanistan trade surged by 84% in 2024 compared to the previous year, reaching $3.197 billion. Iran exported $3.143 billion worth of goods to Afghanistan, while Afghan exports to Iran climbed 116% to $54 million. Iran now supplies approximately 25% of Afghanistan’s imports, including oil products, steel, agricultural goods, and construction materials.
The growing trade volume signals a strengthening economic bond and mutual interest in long-term cooperation between the neighboring countries.
