AT News – Pakistani officials said that at least 213 Prisoners escaped from Malir Prison in Karachi during an evacuation prompted by an earthquake. This comes that 80 prisoners have been recaptured.
According to Geo News, rescue sources stated that during the prison break, at least one inmate was killed and several security personnel were injured.
Arshad Shah, the prison chief said that the escape occurred when prisoners from sections 4 and 5 were moved out of their cells as a safety measure during the tremors.
“More than 600 prisoners were outside their cells at that time. Amid the chaos, 213 managed to escape.” He explained.
Authorities said a large-scale manhunt has been launched to recaptured more than 130 escaped prisoners.
Zia-ul-Hasan Lanjar, the Interior Minister of Sindh province, described the incident as one of the most serious prison breaks in recent years.
