Kabul: Russia has supplied weapons and equipment to Tajikistan recently to strengthen its border defence capability as fears are growing
Russian President Vladimir Putin said on Monday that the shipments were aimed at helping Tajikistan effectively counter threats coming from outside.
Since the Taliban rode to power in Afghanistan, Russia and its Central Asian allies have been fearing Afghanistan could become a breeding ground for terrorists who could slip into their countries.
During a meeting with visiting Tajik President Emomali Rahmon in Russia’s St. Petersburg, Russian President expressed concern over the situation on the Tajik-Afghan borders, Xinhua news agency reported. He called Tajikistan a reliable and close ally of Russia.
Rahmon said that the two countries closely cooperate in the field of security, and he was ready to discuss international and regional issues, particularly the Afghan problem, with Putin.
