KABUL – In a major boost to regional connectivity, Afghanistan, Pakistan, and Uzbekistan have signed a trilateral agreement to launch a feasibility study for the Trans-Afghan Railway project. This ambitious infrastructure initiative aims to establish a direct rail link from Termez in Uzbekistan to Kharlachi in Pakistan, passing through Afghanistan. The proposed 573-kilometer route is expected to dramatically cut transportation times, enabling faster and more cost-effective trade between Central Asia and the Arabian Sea.
The project promises to open new markets for Afghan exports and generate vital transit revenues for Afghanistan. For Uzbekistan, it offers a strategic outlet to the sea, expanding its trade routes and economic integration with global markets. The feasibility study will assess technical and economic factors, laying the groundwork for the railway’s construction.
This agreement highlights the three nations’ commitment to enhancing regional cooperation and infrastructure development, aiming to strengthen trade and economic ties across Central and South Asia.
