AT Kabul: The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) has announced the launch of a new program in Afghanistan aimed at preventing a worsening food crisis among children. Titled “First Foods for Afghanistan”, the initiative is being implemented with support from the United Kingdom.
According to UNICEF, child malnutrition in Afghanistan is rapidly increasing, with 3.5 million children currently suffering from acute food shortagesand90% of children facing inadequate diets. The agency warns that without immediate action, the situation could escalate into a major humanitarian disaster.
“This expanded program is designed to ensure that children receive the essential nutrition they need to grow, stay healthy, and survive,” UNICEF said in a recent report. “It will not only provide direct food support but will also focus on strengthening community-based nutrition systems.”
UNICEF has consistently expressed concern about the growing rates of malnutrition in Afghanistan and has called for sustained support from both the international community and Afghan society.
The organization emphasizes that tackling child malnutrition requires more than just short-term aid it demands long-term commitment, funding, and cooperation at all levels.
