KABUL – At least six people were killed and over a dozen others injured in an explosion Monday near the office of a “peace committee” in Wana, the headquarters of South Waziristan tribal district, officials said. The cause of the blast, which struck the restive area along the Afghanistan border, remains unclear.
Separately, Pakistani security forces said they killed 17 militants attempting to cross from Afghanistan, following the deaths of 71 others in similar incidents over the past three days in North Waziristan.
Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi condemned the attack, vowing that such “cowardly” acts would not weaken Pakistan’s resolve against terrorism. South Waziristan is a stronghold of the outlawed Tehreek-Taliban Pakistan (TTP).
